Although buzz about Bernabe Concepcion being the next Manny Pacquiao is premature, there were Pacman-esque moments in his recent five-round butchery of visitor Sande Otieno on Saturday, January 11, 2009, at the Araneta Coliseum. As a result, Bernabe Concepcion won the vacant WBC International featherweight crown with a fifth-round knockout of Kenya’s Sande Otieno (much like the belt Pacquiao wore four times but at 130 pounds).
Concepcion, a Catanduanes province native who is promoted by — you guessed it — Pacquiao’s MP Promotions outfit. His short work of Otieno was his 17th victory by knockout.
“I knew from the first round that I would control the fight,” Concepcion, who raised his record to 28-1-1 with 18 knockouts. said in Filipino. “I knew I could take his punches.”
